Community Locations -
Police Station, Fire Station, Library, Post Office
|
In this lesson, preschool or kindergarten students shall
demonstrate knowledge of the interaction of location,
family, school, and community, including an understanding of
the reasons for locations of communities of features of
communities. Students will learn about the police station,
public library, fire station, hospital, and post office, and
be able to recognize components of these locations and the
communities and what they bring to the community. This is a
great lesson that get children excited about their community
and can be extended through visits from members of the
community or field trips to places throughout the community.
Grade Level: PreK-K
Concept to be taught: Locations within a community: Police
Station, Public Library, Fire Station, Hospital, and Post
Office.
Objectives: Students will be able to:
1. Using the book, Let's Visit the Police Station, students
will be able to recognize the different components of the
police station.
2. Using the book, D. W. 's Library Card, students will be
able to recognize the different sections of the library.
3. Using the book, Firefighter A to Z, students will be able
to recognize the different parts of the fire station.
4. Using the book, A Visit to the Seasame Street Hospital,
students will be able to recognize the different departments
of the hospital.
5. Using the book, The Post Office Book, students will be
able to recognize the different resources of the post
office.
Materials:
• Paper
• Markers/crayons/color pencils
• Books about different places within a community Examples:

Police Station

3. Distribute paper to draw a picture of the police station
or a police officer.
Day 2
Public Library
1. Introduction

2. Discuss the Library
A. What is a library?
B. What is the library for?
C. Who works at the library?
D. Do you know a librarian?
3. Distribute paper to draw a picture of the library or a
librarian.
Day 3
Fire Station
1. Introduction

2. Discuss the Fire Station
A. Who works at the Fire Station?
B. What do Firefighters do?
C. Do you know a Firefighter?
3. Distribute paper to draw a picture of the Fire Station or
a firefighter
Day 4
Hospital
1. Introduction

Day 5
Post Office
1. Introduction
A. Read Book The Post Office Book By: Gail Gibbons
2. Discuss the Post Office
A. What is the Post Office for?
B. Who works at the Post Office?
C. What do Mailmen do?
D. Do you know someone who works at the Post Office?
3. Distribute paper to draw a picture of the Post Office or
a Mailman.
* Extra: Have students make a book by stapling together each
of the pictures they drew.
Extension:
If possible have the class could invite guest speakers to
come and speak to the class,
example: a police officer, a librarian, a firefighter, a
doctor, and a mailman. Or, after all five lessons have been
taught, the class could go on a field trip to visit each of
the five places.
Assessment: Students will share the Community book
and be able to describe what each place, or person, does. |
