Counting by Two's  - Skip Counting Lesson Plan

In the following math lesson, students will skip count forwards and backwards by twos and be able to create a skip counting activity or game. This is a great lesson that integrates math with music and dance.

Skip Counting by Two's


Grade: 1
Time: 30-40 min.

Materials: number line, copy of "Five Little Speckled Frogs", (song on poster board)

Pronged Focus:
- Math - skip counting by 2's
Dance/Movement - leap frog counting, actions for song Music - backwards skip counting songs.

Student Objectives:
Students will:
1. Be able to skip count forward by 2's
2. Be able to skip count backwards by 2's
3. Be able to create skip counting activity or game
Teaching Procedure: Introduction:
1. Review counting by 1's with students by resigning previously learned song. See Five Little Speckled Frogs song attached.
2. Introduce frog jumping number line. Development:
1. Demonstrate with number line the relationship between counting by 1's and skip counting by 2's.
2. Practice skip-counting technique both forward and backwards on number line.
3. Introduce and explain leapfrog skip counting activity to students.
4. Have students perform leapfrog skip counting activity.
5. Introduce new skip counting by 2's version of Speckled Frog song. See Ten Green and Speckled Frogs.
6. Have students sing song with corresponding actions. Conclusion:
1. In groups of four have students create their own skip counting activities or games.

Assessment:
1. Evaluate student's abilities to skip count both forward and backwards throughout lesson.
2. Assess creativity and completion of group activities or games.

Five green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log,
'Eating some most delicious bugs...yum, yum!
One jumped into the pool, where it was nice and cool.
Now there are four green speckled frogs...glunk, glunk!
(The song is complete when all the frogs have jumped into the cool pool!)
10 Green and Speckled Frogs
Ten green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log,
Eating some most delicious bugs...yum, yum!
Two jumped into the pool, where it was nice and cool.
Now there are eight green speckled frogs...glunk, glunk!
(The song is complete when all the frogs have jumped into the cool pool!)
